Top Ten Home Security Tips

Always lock external doors and windows before leaving the house

Take a minute to walk around your property and view the outside with the eyes of a burglar. Is the gate secure? Have you shut all of the 1st floor windows?

When away for long periods cancel the milk/papers and ask a neighbour to keep an eye on the house for you.

If you live in a close knit
neighbourhood form your
own neighbourhood watch
and present the image of a
community that watches out
for each others property to
strangers and would be burglars,
inform the Police of any suspicious persons.

Never leave car keys on display in the hallway, burglars will break into your house simply to steal your car and as a result your car theft insurance may be invalid if the keys can be easily seen from outside of the house.

Check sheds and make sure that garden tools etc are secure, we often keep hundreds of pounds worth of garden machinery in our sheds and these are easy targets for burglars.

Ensure that ladders are secure and cannot be used by a burglar to gain entrance to 1st floor windows.

Secure cycles, trailers or caravans with padlocks and chains to deny opportunist thieves an easy target.

Remove dustbins etc from fence-lines to prevent burglars from using these to climb over fences and gates to gain access to your property.
